ASCN UK Podcast Launched: First Two Episodes Now Live

Date: 1 November 2024

The ASCN UK is delighted to announce the launch of our new podcast, Beyond the Bag: Challenging Differences in Stoma Care, with the first two episodes now available.

This podcast covers the full patient journey – from diagnosis and surgery to life with a stoma – while exploring the psychological adjustments along the way. This series highlights disparities in stoma care services compared to other long-term conditions, raising awareness of what exemplary care should look like. Our goal is to engage stoma care teams across the UK to address these variations, and to demonstrate the value, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency of quality stoma care services.

Join us for our first two episodes as we challenge the inequalities and explore what true, quality care should look like for all.

Episode 1: The journey begins – Diagnosis and preparing for surgery

In this episode, ASCN UK’s Acting Chair, Angie Perrin explores the journey from diagnosis to post-operative support with Specialist Stoma Care Nurses Natasha Rolls and Sally Nightingale, and expert by experience, Caroline Bramwell. You’ll hear about the importance of preparing mentally for surgery, the role of specialist stoma care nurses, and the need for standardised care pathways.

Episode 2: Coming into hospital for surgery

In episode 2, Natasha Rolls speaks to Richard Brady, a consultant colorectal surgeon to discuss the factors influencing the decision to form a stoma, the training of future surgeons, and the critical role of stoma care nurses in ensuring patient quality of life.
