ASCNUK25 Charity Spotlight: Paediatric Stoma Nurse Group (PSNG)
Date: 25 August 2025
Caring for Little Lives: The Role of the Paediatric Stoma Nurse Group (PSNG)
When a child is born with or develops a condition that requires a stoma, it can be a daunting and emotional experience for families. Thankfully, across the UK and Ireland, there is a dedicated network of specialist nurses working tirelessly to ensure these children – and their families – receive the care, support, and guidance they need.
Who Are PSNG?
The Paediatric Stoma Nurse Group (PSNG) is a collective of passionate and experienced nurses specialising in the care of neonates and children with stomas. Established in 2005, the group began as a grassroots collaboration among paediatric stoma nurses and has since grown into a well-established and respected forum.
Today, PSNG includes around 50 members, comprising:
- Neonatal and paediatric stoma nurses
- Adult stoma nurses with paediatric experience
- Neonatal and paediatric surgical nurses
These professionals are based in both hospitals and community settings, providing holistic care before, during, and after the formation of a stoma – and often continuing to support children even after their stomas are closed. Many members also specialise in continence management, offering expertise that goes beyond stoma care alone.
Why PSNG Matters
What sets PSNG apart is their dedication to collaboration and innovation. The group works closely with industry partners on research and development, ensuring that children benefit from the latest advancements in stoma care. They’ve also developed a range of paediatric-specific documentation, helping to standardise and improve care across the board.
Their proactive, independent approach makes PSNG a vital voice in paediatric healthcare – advocating for best practices, supporting nurses in the field, and providing a much-needed lifeline for families navigating life with a stoma.
Education and Connection
PSNG isn’t just about clinical care – it’s also a hub for knowledge-sharing and professional development. The group meets three times a year at various locations and support in the organisation of an annual study day where nurses come together to learn, share experiences, and improve their practice. These events are key to keeping stoma care standards high and consistent across regions.
Meet the Team
At the helm of PSNG are three dedicated professionals:
- Chair: Niamh Geoghegan
- Secretary: Nicola Webber
- Treasurer: Hillary Kennard
Their leadership ensures the group continues to grow, evolve, and stay connected to the communities they serve.
