Jean Preston Fund

This ASCN UK fund was set up in 2010 with the unique purpose of offering financial support for its members for any stoma care specialist professional educational.

The Jean Preston Fund (JPF) enables any full member of ASCN to apply for an Education Grant which can be used towards developing their personal knowledge or service to patients with a stoma.

The Fund has historically been based solely on donations, although starting in 2017, a percentage of the Annual Conference profit will be added to this fund as an acknowledgement of the challenges facing stoma care nurse and practitioner funding. Click here for more information on the new legislation applicable to all healthcare professionals.

There are therefore 2 avenues of JPF application:
1) Attendance of ASCN UK Annual conference: please click here.
2) Other educational funding related to the development of your personal knowledge, or the sharing of knowledge, and education in the clinical practice of stoma care nursing, including: educational development or research projects; educational career progress or career interruption re-entry; attendance of another conference, educational event, specialist department or service; please click here to submit your application.

Funding/part funding can be applied for via the JPF; for conference registration fees, travel to conference, and or accommodation at conference.

Please note that only ASCN UK members can apply for the JPF. If you are not a member, please click here to register today.

Please be advised that by submitting an application, this does not guarantee funding will be available. Priority for funding is given to ASCN UK members who play an active role in ASCN UK and have been long standing member. If successful, full funding may not be granted due to limited funding available. Funding may be either a contribution or full funding at the discretion of ASCN UK Committee.

If you are submitting an application that is not for the ASCN UK annual conference, you will be requested to share feedback of the event you have attended. We are sure you can acknowledge the sharing of knowledge and what you have gained from the event/experience will be of significant value to your colleagues, and raises the purpose of JPF supporting such CPD.

More Information on Jean Preston

The fund was named after Jean Preston (RGN, SCN,Bsc Hons), an eminent Stoma Care Nurse who dedicated her professional career to the care of patients with a stoma.  Jean worked for nearly 30 years within the Northumbria NHS Trust running both the Stoma Care and Breast Care Service.

Having initially set up and ran stoma care and breast care study days, she then developed and ran a specialist ENB 980 stoma care short course for 6 years. Jean undertook an active role in WCET UK, as treasurer for 5 years and then WCET UK Chairperson and UK International Delegate from 1997-2001. During this time, she created the quarterly WCET UK newsletter and introduced and developed the stoma care conference.

As a Founder member of ECET (European Council of Enteral Therapists) from 2003, she held the Vice President post until 2007 and then Education Officer 2007-2013 and was one of the key individuals behind its inaugural conference.

Jean has always believed that ‘education is a continuous cycle that should be shared and utilized by the nurse specialist’ and that ‘knowledge is the vehicle that can empower those providing care’.

Jean is described by her colleagues as having a quiet disposition, but she was a determined individual and was depicted as having the “ability to get things done without being forceful. She was passionate about the development and progression of stoma care services to patients, as well as the recognition of stoma care nursing expertise”.
