New BJN Article by Advancing Stoma Care Services Project Members
Date: 27 September 2024
Despite that up to 220,000 individuals live with a stoma in the UK and an increasing number require stoma formation each year, experts in the field and practitioners alike acknowledge that there is a lack of standardised, evidence-based pathways for stoma care management. This has led to variations in services and unmet patient needs, even with Specialist Stoma Care Nurses’ (SSCN’s) undoubted skill, expertise and endeavour.
In recognition of this gap, the Advancing Stoma Care Services (ASCS) project aims to develop comprehensive, mandatory evidence-based pathways for stoma care, addressing the needs of patients and healthcare providers alike.
We are delighted to share that members of the ASCS project group have recently wrote an article for BJN (British Journal of Nursing) titled ‘Raising the voice of specialist stoma care nurses: a call for a national strategy in stoma care’. The article covers a number of key points including the multifaceted role of specialist stoma care nurses, stoma care in the UK, learning from others, and more.
