2nd BJN Article Published for the ASCS Project
Date: 25 September 2025
Despite advances in stoma care products and services, many people living with a stoma continue to face inconsistent care, limited access to specialist support, and policies that prioritise cost savings over quality of life. Without a national, evidence-based treatment pathway, individuals are left at risk of complications, anxiety, and inequitable care provision.
In recognition of this urgent need, a new article has been published in the British Journal of Nursing (BJN) Stoma Care Supplement titled “Stoma care crisis: the urgent need for nationwide pathways and patient-centric policies”.
The piece highlights:
- Gaps in current UK stoma care policy and the resulting “postcode lottery” in services
- The importance of mandated access to Specialist Stoma Care Nurses (SSCNs)
- The risks of prioritising low-cost products over safe, effective, personalised care
- The call for a long-term, evidence-based national pathway to improve outcomes and quality of life
